Although base and mid-level models had fairly reliable engines carried over from the previous generation, the 2004 model year of the BMW 545i used the N62 which has a track record for being expensive to maintain and prone to issues. This is the only comment that matters. Here's my experience: 2007 X5 4.8i - required $25k in repairs between 75-100k miles. 2013 X3 xDrive28i - required a new engine for $25k @ 60k miles because of a known failure. 2008 M3 - am told I need to replace rod bearings semi-regularly at $2500/time because of a known failure. The fact that the first gen 335 with the n54 injectors are $3,300 and fuel pump is $1,000 is pretty bad. I have a 2013 135is with n55 engine and 6 speed manual. That being said, my vote goes to an LCI E90 328i. N52 engine is regarded by many as one of BMWs more reliable modern engines and one of the last naturally aspirated engines that BMW made. TBH, every BMW model has their own weak points and common issues. My e90 with the n52 engine has had less problems than a number of my previous cars..
